Fortum is building a new emission-free electricity-based district heating production facility in the Nuijala area, Espoo. The facade of the power plant was designed by Architects Davidsson Tarkela, a part of Solwers.
The architectural solution supports Espoo’s Clean Heat project with a material-efficient facade. The lower part of the factory is lined with recyclable aluminum sheet and forms a pedestal highlighting the heat accumulator’s art.
The design of the facade is guided by the artwork of the tall district heating radiator. The artwork, titled “Loop” by Thórdís Erla Zoëga, depicts water movement symbolizing the heat accumulator and clean energy production. The lighting uses different shades of white to represent the plant’s operations. The changing colors of the light reflect the plant’s activity cycles, creating a visual narrative of energy flow and connecting the plant to the landscape.
The artist selection and coordination were done in collaboration with EMMA, the Espoo Museum of Modern Art.
Fortum’s Nuijala power plant is under construction and will be commissioned in late 2025.
