Solwers company Lukkaroinen Architects is responsible for the main, architectural, and interior design of seven new daycare centres in Turku. The core of the project focuses on healthy, safe, and high-quality learning environments.

The City of Turku plans to construct seven new daycare centers using a lifecycle model, where the selected service provider, YIT, will be responsible not only for construction but also for the maintenance of the properties for 20 years. The model ensures that the construction of the properties is high-quality, energy-efficient, and carbon-neutral. Lukkaroinen is responsible for the main, architectural, and interior design of the sites. The project is exceptionally large even on a national scale.
All seven sites will mainly be implemented with massive wood structures and aiming for the highest Building Information Foundation’s YL environmental classification level (five stars). The buildings will be energy-efficient and will produce part of the required energy with solar power.
The City of Turku invests in schools and daycare centres
Turku will invest significantly in schools and daycare centers in the coming years as part of a broader renovation project, which includes the construction of a total of 12 new daycare centers in Turku. The goal is to replace old, demolished facilities with healthy and safe buildings that meet the city’s growing space needs. As part of the project, Turku’s new daycare facility design handbook will be piloted, guiding towards equitable and consistent spaces.
The lifecycle project includes new daycare buildings in Pääskyvuori, Pihlajaniemi, Skanssi, Harittu, Varissuo, Uittamo, and Martti. The total area of the sites is approximately 15,000 gross square meters. The new daycare centers will accommodate about 970 early childhood education children and about 250 staff members.
The contract for the seven daycare centers was signed in June 2025. The construction work for the first sites is expected to begin in spring 2026, and the daycare centers of the lifecycle project are expected to be completed by 2029.
